Thanks to Katherina Gong again! Mina was able to continue with her mini TK Rock project with her senpai’s virtual help when our city was still under semi-lockdown. 憨人 (Fool) has become her favorite song now because it’s a band sound rock song we like and has lyrics that are very meaningful. This song and Katherina have also given Mina a chance to continue trying to have fun singing Taiwanese songs!!!! And the latest scope is, some of the pandemic prevention measures have been lifted. At least we can roam around, walk a bit outdoor and get a haircut.
Both Katherina and Mina threw in their contributions in the ad lib guitar parts and yes, when two guitarists meet, that’s the kind of cool chemistry you see (and here). Meanwhile, our long tall drummer Jennifer has her drums in the bandroom so it is kind of hard for her to do virtual jamming with us when everyone is supposed to stay at home. Lucky that Mina put in lots of effort trying to play the drums part for this MayDay song. She has also done really well in doing all the backing vocal. Trust me, it’s not easy.
Wait, I am not entirely correct. After making a cover for this song, I…I don’t want to call them guitarists no more. I think both of them are more like..musicians. For Katherina, it only took her like 1 day to get the song ready: singing, the rhythm guitar part, and the ad lib solo towards the end…the song was originally in G Key, but Mina wanted to change it to C as the original key for singing was a bit low. It wasn’t a problem for Katherina. Get out of town! Of course we didn’t have music scores for her. You know, she plays the drums, the bass guitar, and I think she is a level 8 pianist (not recently, but got it some years ago). She also composes songs and is a lyricist. I think I have read about her in the newspaper that she got like a scholarship for writing songs and all at this young age. So it took like less than a day, and she sent us everything we needed.
Then for Mina….thanks to COVID. Everyone gets stuck at home for the past what, 4 to 5 weeks? We all had to wear an N95 face mask properly, or else will be fined and I tell ya, you see cops patrolling everywhere. Even when I drive, I need to put on a KN95 face mask or else cops would pull me over. No walking the dog, no smoking outside a to-go eatery places or the back alley when workers want to take a break; no buses; no schools; no discos, no bars, no movie theatres, no band rooms, no beaches, no non-essentail shops basically, except for groceries stores and restaurants. So we ALL basically got stuck. Jennfier lives near by but she is not supposed to come over. So Mina has not had much to do, and we have just been playing some music. So like SumSum, a.k.a. Katherina, it took Mina 1/2 a day to figure out how to play the drums part for this song and recorded the drums track, then 1/2 a day to figure out all the guitar parts, plus recording it, plus figuring out the new C key bassline for me (I am lazy) plus riffing, then showed me how, then the hardest part for me would have been to get the backing vocal parts figured out and recorded, and Mina took care of all that. It took only 2 days for everything to be ready. I am pretty impressed. She just turned 12, and she has not spent me a single dime to learn anything she has done in music. So I went to buy her lots of snacks: chips, juice, fruits, candies, MILO (not cheap), crackers and…and chips again, to reward her. hahaha. I hope it has been a good experience for her.
So folks, like what the lyrics says, we hope you will also continue to pursue your dreams, and hope that all of them will come true all day!
