Paper Mario for the N64 has become one of the most expensive and sought-after games that Nintendo published for the system.
But it hasn’t always been that way.
For the better part of the last two decades, loose copies of Paper Mario were selling for around just 20 to 30 dollars apiece.
But in May of 2020, Nintendo announced a new game in the Paper Mario series: The Origami King
And, overnight, the price of Paper Mario for the N64 skyrocketed.
Luckily, prices have come down a little since then. But loose cartridges can still sell for over $100 on Ebay.
So why do people love this game so much?
First of all, the game features unique RPG mechanics that are fully fleshed out, but also simple enough to not be overbearing or tedious.
The game also has a really interesting story and a distinctive set of original and funny characters.
And finally, the paper-inspired art style has aged so much better than most of the games in the N64 library. Making it one of the easier games to go back and revisit.
